Great leaders go to the wall for their people.Â
The Board says, “we need to cut costs” and the practical leader knows these things…
- The team is already working lean
- Performance will be diminished if even one employee is lost
- The team may know the best way to save.
So what does the great leader do?
He stands up and says, “If you leave my people alone, I’ll find you the money.”
Then he engages the team and makes the ask,Â
“If we can shave xx% off the budget, I can keep you – but I need ideas.”
Then, the team rolls up their sleeves and gets to work.
Most leaders are amazed at what they will be willing to let go to save the jobs of their coworkers.
Poor leaders are afraid to be this transparent…and yet, not afraid to blind-side someone with a layoff. Don’t be that leader.
When you are willing to go to the wall for your employees and have their back, they’ll go to the wall for you. Now, that’s practicality.
